Sizzle into Summer: Griddle Grilling Tips for Backyard Entertaining

Summer is here, and there’s no better way to enjoy the sunshine than by firing up the griddle and cooking outdoors. Whether you’re flipping burgers, searing veggies, or preparing a full-on Sunday breakfast under the open sky, a flat-top griddle brings restaurant-quality results to your own backyard.

As real estate professionals, we know that outdoor living is a huge selling point for many homebuyers. But it’s not just about square footage—it’s about how you use your space. A backyard griddle setup can transform your patio into the heart of summer entertaining.

Why Choose a Griddle?

Unlike traditional grills, a griddle offers a smooth, flat cooking surface heated evenly across the entire area. This means fewer flare-ups and more control. Pancakes, bacon, quesadillas, smash burgers, stir-fry—you name it, you can cook it. It’s like having an outdoor kitchen without the hefty remodel.

Smash Burger Recipe

Craving a juicy, flavorful burger with crispy edges? Try this Blackstone Smash Burger recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 4 hamburger buns

  • Butter for toasting buns

  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, condiments

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Griddle: Set your Blackstone griddle to medium-high heat.

  2. Form the Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and roll into loose balls.

  3. Toast the Buns: Lightly butter the insides of the buns and toast them on the griddle until golden brown. Remove and set aside.

  4. Cook the Burgers: Place the beef balls on the griddle and smash them flat using a spatula or burger press. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the edges are crispy, then flip and cook for an additional 2 minutes. If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking.

  5. Assemble the Burgers: Place each patty on the bottom bun, add your desired toppings, and cover with the top bun.

Griddle Grilling Tips:

1. Preheat Properly: Give your griddle 10–15 minutes to heat up evenly. You’ll want different heat zones: high heat for searing meats, medium for veggies, and low for delicate items like fish or eggs.

2. Oil Smartly: Use high smoke point oils like avocado or canola. Lightly coat the surface and your food to prevent sticking and enhance flavor.

3. Use the Right Tools: Invest in long-handled spatulas, scrapers, and squirt bottles for water or oil. These not only make cooking easier but also safer and cleaner.

4. Clean as You Go: Griddles are easy to maintain if you keep up with them. Scrape off excess food as you cook, and give the surface a quick clean while it's still warm—just like the pros do.

5. Go Beyond Burgers: Try grilled street corn, chicken fajitas, hibachi-style noodles, or even grilled peaches for dessert. The griddle’s versatility is part of the fun.

Create a Griddle-Friendly Space

A well-thought-out patio can be the ultimate gathering spot. Consider:

  • Shade options like umbrellas or pergolas

  • Prep space with a rolling cart or outdoor counter

  • Seating arranged for both dining and lounging

  • Lighting for evening get-togethers

A home that supports easy, enjoyable entertaining is a home people fall in love with—whether you're staying put or planning to list.
